Social Justice Pathway

This pathway aims to ensure individuals with dyslexia in the juvenile criminal justice system and at-risk populations receive equitable identification, support, and access to educational opportunities.

Through a collaborative partnership with the Bexar County Juvenile Probation Department, Celebrate Dyslexia is advancing dyslexia-informed practices within the juvenile justice intake process. This work is guided by a formal Memorandum of Understanding and currently serves students in residential treatment at East Central ISD’s Krier Center Bexar County Learning Center and the Juvenile Justice Academy. We are also working in coordination with the Texas Juvenile Justice Department as this effort expands, ensuring students receive timely screening, appropriate services, and educational support.

By addressing the unique challenges faced by justice-involved youth, the initiative works to reduce barriers, promote literacy, and support successful reentry and long-term outcomes.

Our Work in Action

Policy and Awareness

Influence criminal justice policy and public perception, highlighting dyslexia as a treatable neurobiological condition that impacts educational outcomes, behavior, and recidivism risk.

Screening and Identification

Partner with the Texas Juvenile Justice Department to implement screening protocols for incoming inmates and at-risk populations within facilities, ensuring early detection and referral for appropriate support.

Targeted Intervention

Offer evidence-based reading intervention programs within correctional facilities to improve literacy skills, foster self-advocacy, and enhance cognitive and social-emotional development for individuals with dyslexia.

Reentry and Support

Develop post-release programs that integrate job training, educational opportunities, and stability supports for formerly incarcerated individuals, connecting literacy gains in custody with long-term success in the community.

Our Impact in 2025

  • 300 Probation officers trained through our Dyslexia 101 seminar.
  • We are providing indirect services to 77% of students at the KCBC Learning Center.
  • Partnered with Representative John Lujan to write HB5002 which mandates a comprehensive five-year study by the Texas Juvenile Justice Department and Texas Education Agency focused on identifying and supporting children with dyslexia in juvenile facilities.
  • Collaborated with UP Partnership on a proposal to Bexar County commissioners to add a dyslexia team in the Public Health office to support Justice Involved Youth coming from every school district.
